Nana Michelle Aloha Recipes Daughter Jessica’s Famous Hawaiian Shoyu Chicken Recipe
My daughter was still in High School when she started experimenting with a Shoyu Chicken recipe one of her teachers gave her to try. She said something was missing and finally tweaked the recipe to what has become one of her signature dishes that she gets asked to make for every party or gathering.
Ingredients:
5 lbs. Chicken Thighs
2 cups Shoyu (if you are using Soy Sauce use the light soy sauce)
2 cups Light Brown Sugar (very important to not use dark brown sugar!)
3-4 cloves of garlic minced fine
1/4 teaspoon of Chinese 5 Spice Powder
Directions:
1) Mix together all the ingredients in a bowl except for the chicken thighs.
2) Place the chicken thighs and all the other mixed ingredients in a large pot and cover it with a lid.
3) Let the chicken marinate in the Shoyu Sauce mixture for at least an hour.
4) After the chicken thighs have marinated for at least an hour turn the stove top burner on med. heat and let the chicken simmer for an hour stirring every so often from the bottom of the pot to get all the chicken thighs evenly cooked.
5) Remove from the heat and let sit at least 5 minutes (if you can wait that long!
We serve it over fresh cooked rice here in Hawaii
